Uttarakhand (English: / ˈʊtərɑːkʌnd /, [ 19 ] / ˌʊtərəˈkʌnd / [ 20 ] or / ˌʊtəˈrækənd /; 21 Hindi: [ˈʊtːərɑːkʰəɳɖ], lit.'Northern Land'), formerly known as Uttaranchal (English: / ˌʊtəˈræntʃʌl /; the official name until 2007), 22 is a state in northern India.
Uttarakhand, state of India, located in the northwestern part of the country. It is bordered to the northwest by the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, to the northeast by the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, to the southeast by Nepal, and to the south and southwest by the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
Uttarakhand lies on the southern slope of the Himalaya range, and the climate and vegetation vary greatly with elevation, from glaciers at the highest elevations to tropical forests at the lower elevations. The highest elevations are covered by ice and bare rock.
