I was in the same situation. I moved from MA to NJ and had an expired MA registration from 2020. I called the local Carmax office and the woman I spoke to I would likely need it. I still booked an appointment with them afterwards, and we went through the appraisal/checklist process before they sell the car.
Had a great experience a week ago selling to CarMax. Honored their online offer price. Gave me my plates back after inspecting the car. Very smooth process. Agreed with what others have said, just make sure you clean your car before inspection. Good luck.
When Carmax looked at my car physically they offered $600 MORE than the online offer. Granted my car was very clean and low miles but still! KBB sent me to the typical used car dealers who were typical wheeler dealer and didnt earn my trust for several reasons. Carmax was easy, quick, no haggle (a plus in my book). 2nd car I've sold to Carmax.
Sell it privately You will get at least $3000 more than Carmax will offer. Don't understand why people don't know to NEVER trade a car in Always sell it privately. My mother in laws 2011 Jeep with only 83K miles. got quotes Carmax $8000 Carvana $9800, I just sold it privately on Facebook for $11,400 in 1 day.
The new car place offered us $2k less than CarMax for the trade in. Went back to CarMax with the title, registration, and id. 30-40 minutes later walked out with a check. They handle all the paperwork. 10/10 would sell again.
Some life changes this fall have enabled my family to go down to one car, so we opted to keep the larger vehicle and sell the smaller vehicle. I used to love wheeling and dealing on used cars, but as I’ve gotten older, the less I like dealing with the general public. So: I started exploring direct sale to Vroom, Carmax, and Carvana.

Write down what carvanna offered. Find out what Carmax will offer. List it for a few grand more than the higher of the two. Unless you need a car between selling and buying the truck, then find out what carvana/carmax will give you and find a dealership with the car you want and see what they give you on trade in.
At Carmax with an appointment, around 2 hours from my experience. They have to appraise it then give you an offer (about an hour). If you decide to sell it, then another hour. If they are busy, maybe 3 hours. If you have equity on the car, you'll get a check same day.
Yes. I’ve done this with my Honda Accord. However, they don’t buy Honda leases anymore due to Hondas new policies. I received extra money from my accord but when selling a crosstrek to them I owned them money, I paid with my debit card and they paid off the loan. You’ll need to get your payoff amount on the day of sale
