By the way, B1 contains the plan number.
That's how INDIRECT works - the argument is a reference to another cell, not just a number. In your case, you are telling Excel to put the value of cell "5" into A2, which does not make sense. You can put something like "A5" in cell A1 and then cell A2 would have whatever value is in cell A5.

I have a cell reference in a cell; ie, in cell A1 there is Z1 so using INDIRECT I can reference A1 to use the range Z1 in my formula which is fine. As INDIRECT is volatile and I would like another way of using the value in cell A1 without using INDIRECT; any ideas would be very helpful.
