It's possibly the reason, but I thought even paid user could downgrade to free plan, the free version is quite limited no IMAP/SMTP just web access and possibly the Zoho mail app. The paid version of Zoho mail is reasonably priced at around $/€/£1 per user, so if you're using it for business, the cost shouldn't be a problem.
The biggest advantage not to use Zoho Mail but Outlook is in a situation no change is a good change Zoho has integrated option to O365. Having this separation of email to Zoho will create another maintenance task to your IT guys. Overall, using core services in a system is always the best.
Zoho mail or FastMail. I've tested many providers and now I'm settling between Zoho and FastMail. I have 8GBs of emails, so Zoho plan (10GB) would be $12 vs FastMail Standard (30GB) would be $50. I really like FastMail lay out, speed, space and alias but I really like Zoho's pricing and I'm trying to justify paying more than 4 times for FastMail.
