In 2020, NASA granted a fixed-price, indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity award to Axiom Space, worth up to $140 million, to develop at least one commercial module to be attached to the ISS. In 2021, Axiom contracted Thales Alenia Space to build its first two modules for €110 million ($117.4 million).
Axiom Space, co-founded by Suffredini and SGT chief executive Kam Ghaffarian, is still in its earliest phases. Suffredini said the company has raised a seed round of funding and is talking with investors now about raising a larger round of funding this fall.
As an example, Axiom Space’s contract with NASA provides ~5% of the funding needed to build Axiom Station; the rest must come from financing and revenue. The freeflyer contract was worth $140M, so this gives a total station cost estimate of ~$3B.
