Girard was founded in the spring of 1868, in opposition to Crawfordsville, and named after the town of Girard, Pennsylvania, the former home of trustee Charles Strong. [4] It was based around the surveyed line of the Kansas City, Fort Scott and Gulf Railroad, in an attempt to gain an advantage over its rival. [5] [6]
Henry Winfield Haldeman (June 21, 1848 – March 20, 1905), familiarly known as Harry Haldeman, was a banker, physician and two-term mayor of Girard, Kansas, in the late 19th century. He was the husband and stepbrother of banker Alice Haldeman, stepbrother of social reformer Jane Addams, father of radical publisher Marcet Haldeman-Julius.
The State Bank of Girard, at 105 E. Prairie in Girard, Kansas, was built in 1873. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. [1] It is 30 by 50 feet (9.1 m × 15.2 m) in plan and was Girard's first brick building. It was built in Italianate style and was modified c.1915 with Classical Revival -style changes.

In May of that year, she reorganized the private Bank of Girard into the State Bank of Girard. She was elected its president, an office which no other woman in Kansas had previously held, and served in that capacity until her death.
