An interesting topic. A while back, there was an article in TRAINS magazine saying there are just 19 car rental counters in various Amtrak and VIA train stations. A couple that I have used are Whitefish, MT and Jasper, AB. I once was thinking of a trip to Truckee, CA, then renting a car for some sightseeing.
Still, it'd be awful nice, (but not too practical except to mileage collectors) to be able to enter the 3 letter Amtrak station code as START TRIP, and the 3 letter Amtrak station code as END TRIP, and have the mileage calculated out for you. (BONUS: One could design it with a "via" 3 letter station code too, so one could enter: START = CHI.
The train comes in; the conductor and/or train attendants step off; you walk up to one of them; they tell you what to do. As I mentioned, if the train is late, you have nobody to ask. Before hand, find out the name of nearest manned station prior to your and check by phone to Amtrak when the train leaves that station.
National Train Day events in May usually have lots of souvenirs. If the Amtrak Special train is at your site they have a souvenir car. Ebay usually has a supply of pins, posters, etc for sale.
Atlantic City's station is near many casinos, it is a New Jersey Transit station but you can still book tickets to ACY through Amtrak, connecting through Philadelphia 30th Street Station. I'm not sure but it might be the same station Amtrak used to use for the Atlantic City Express.
It looks like there are several options to use Amtrak to view the 2024 solar expose. - Vermonter (would require 2 night stay) - Empire service (Oddly enough also a 1 night stay from NYC unless the the Maple leaf is on time going to Syracuse and running late leaving Syracuse) - Lake shore...
It is interesting how many major stations are not owned by Amtrak. Here is the list of the top 25 Amtrak stations by total ridership (origin and destination). Amtrak owns 10 (including the top 4), others own 15. 1. New York Penn, NY (7,832,874) <==Amtrak 2. Washington Union, DC (4,278,930) <==Amtrak 3. Philadelphia 30th Street, PA (3,675,761 ...
One thing to consider which may or may not prove helpful if you need to change your travel arrangements on short notice, the station at Ottumwa, IA (an attractive Burlington era stone depot) is staffed by an Amtrak ticket agent who could sell a new ticket or exchange old ones on the spot whereas the LaPlata station has only a caretaker to open up the place at train times.
You really cannot park overnight at the St. Louis station since they opened the new one. There's some short term metered parking, but that's about it. You could park nearby at Union Station (which was the actual train station many years ago but is now a Rouse mall), but it would be a fairly long walk to the new Amtrak station.
If Amtrak ever moves to the Miami Intermodal Center just outside MIA, taking Metrorail between Brightline and Amtrak wouldn't be too bad. As it is now, the walk from the existing Amtrak station to the Tri-Rail/Metrorail transfer station isn't nice but I found it fine a year ago (and kind of welcome after 30h on the train).
