When the 101ST AIRBORNE DIVISION deployed to Europe in for REFORGER '76 I was attending primary school in a Belgian Army Barracks in Germany. Parts of the Division were hosted by my father's unit, the 4TH Belgian Army Cavalry Regiment in Arnsberg, Germany.
Here is a nice US made variation, that has become the most sought after 101st patch of them all. The velvet officers patch. Mark Bando classifies this patch as the US type 8. These were made in 1943 for the officers in the 101st before they sailed for England. Enough were made so that every officer in the 101st could have 2 for their dress ...
I can speak to the beret flashes and yes, they are period correct for the 101st Airborne Division in the 1970s. From left to right: 101st Airborne Division, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment 101st Airborne Division, 1st Brigade, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment

The division had been reorganized from parachute to airmobile in mid-1968 in Vietnam and designated the 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile). The parenthetical designation changed to Air Assault on 4 October 1974 and the name of the badge was likewise changed....Maj. Jack R. Rickman is credited with the design of the Air Assault Badge when he ...
After the 101st was moved to Fort Jackson, my dad was switched from the 8th Division to the 101st as an MP. As a Training Division it is my understanding that the Army removed the "Airborne" tab from everything associated with the 101st Division (e.g. the unit patch, the flag, the stationary, etc.).
I worked with TIOH many times, including getting an oval approved for the 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Abn) in 2002, and the shoulder sleeve insignia, distinctive unit insignia and combat service identification badge for the 101st Sustainment Brigade.
Here's mine- belonged to a Lt. in B/1 327 who served in 71-72. Part of a larger group, the only item I don't have is the embroidered 'Rat Pack" beret he brought home. 101st patch is U.S. made with VN made Ranger and Airborne arcs. Name is local as well.
On Oct 15 the Company was detached from the 2/17 Cavalry and attached to 3d Bde of the 101st Abn Div and moved from Camp Eagle to Camp Evans. 10 Teams were employed in support of 3d Bde from 15 to 30 Oct. The Ranger Teams worked around FSB Gladiator, Helen, and Firestone.
