Consumer prices up 2.9 percent from July 2023 to July 2024. Over the year ended July 2024, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 2.9 percent. This was the first time since March 2021 that 12-month increase was below 3.0 percent, when prices rose 2.6 percent.

Understanding the CPI. A Consumer Price Index of 158 indicates 58% inflation since 1982, while a CPI index of 239 would indicate 139% inflation since 1982. The commonly quoted inflation rate of say 3% is actually the change in the Consumer Price Index from a year earlier.
