2000 head gasket replacement/ valve adjustment this will not start as a complete walkthru , though it it may end up becoming that. my outback wagon is an auto with a 2.5 sohc motor, you can't remove the heads in a dohc without pulling the cams first. first off, get a manual, haynes, subaru, download one, just get one.

The engine came out on Saturday, about a 8 hour process. I have the intake manifold off as well as the timing chain cover and will remove the timing chain assy as well as rear cover, cams oil and water pump and then remove the heads. Gasket kit is on order $270.00 for a complete engine gasket set.

Crankshaft pulley has to come off to remove the timing belt cover to take the timing belt off to remove the heads. Since you don't say what year/model/engine you have I can't confirm if the valve assembly you are talking about ...

When my 01 started leaking driver side at 65K the dealer cost was $1500 for just pulling the head and replacing the gasket and subaru stepped up and covered it. At 160,000 miles it was fine and leak free. So $1800 with machining is a decent price.
