The only exception is for certain quests, where a companion will go to a specific location. In the case of Nick, that could be the Memory Den in Goodneighbor if you have progressed the main quest enough. I thing he also goes back to his office for one quest, so check there as well. I did the mission with bobbi from Goodneighbour, where i had to break out a guy from prison in DC. Diamond city became very angry. When i returned to sactuary some time later Nick Valentine was hostile. I don't have any mods installed. Since nick is a companion i can't kill him, and he doesn't seem to become friendly again on his own.
