Working on creating the surnames for a fantasy country. I want some sort of family naming system based off parental names, a bit like the "mac" often found in Scottish names. There are two examples from books I've read that keep popping into my mind. In Tamora Pierce's Wild Magic series, last names are based off of parents.

  3. Are Character Last Names Mandatory? - Writing Forums

The only time I would think that last names would be mandatory is in sprawling fantasy or sci-fi epics, ala' The Lord of the Rings or The Wheel of Time. In those instances, the last names help define the characters, especially if you take the time to create countries and naming patterns for each country.

Medieval last/family names worked somewhat different then it does today. Primarily speaking, they revolved around a prefession, a family member, or a location. Perhaps the best for you would be either the "family" name or the "location" name. For instance a location name would be: Jean de la Tour, Henri D'Auvergne, Louis de Bourbon, Richard of ...

Some other names with a strong meaning could include: Stark, Valens, Valentine, Valerius, Arsen, Averey, Balera, Battair. Stark is the most common, but it's up to you, It seems you like Greven so use Greven. Unless you are using her full name all the time it doesn't matter all that much.

So in my fantasy WIP, I have three gods: Life/creation, Death/destruction, and Spirit/illusion. I've been struggling something fierce to find them names. Now, before you go start making suggestions, I've probably already done it. lol I went into a translator and typed in any word slightly related to them, but nothing quite worked.

Another big fantasy heroine right now is Katniss Everdeen (2-3). My protagonist, Nina Constantinos, actually has a 4-syllable last name and I feel like it works for her - granted it's not fantasy. So don't fixate on syllable count. As for help - you can try baby-naming websites for first names and phone books for last names (if you can find one).

  8. How do you come up with names for you character

For last names, I use the same "technique" Ashkenazi Jewish people had when forced to take up family names in the late 18th century. A mixture of toponyms, relevant professions and misc terms in German. The latter can be easily used for any fantasy world because it's a historical technique.

  9. Creating Place Names in Fantasy - Creative Writing Forums

    www.writingforums.org/threads/creating-place-names-in-fantasy.163776

My fantasy world is heavily based on medieval England, so I stuck with very English names. I made 2 lists. One contained every type of place name I could think of. (Farm, Valley, Mount, Rest, Home, Hall, Port, Field, Town, Hold, Fell, Fort, Isle, etc, etc.) Then I made a list of other, somewhat fantasy-ish, names I likes.

As far as French names, the response about googling "French names" or "French last names" or "French first names" is the best option, and should give you all you need. It is likely there isn't anyone on here with direct, specific knowledge and experience with the French child welfare system, in particular.

Likes Received: 6. My initial impression is that it is fantasy technologically progressed to the gunpowder age, incorporating other elements of fantasy such as magic, other races, etc, in a setting in which guns, cannons, muskets, and steam engines are used instead of swords and bows and arrows. That said, I only just heard of it the other day ...
